Why I wrote this book
In October 2007, while on a cycling training weekend in the French Alps, I crashed my bike on Alpe d’Huez. My head challenged the road to a duel which the road duly won, and I spent the rest of the year recovering and trying to make sense of what had happened.
It was my bad thing, and I found myself lost and isolated in the world that I had, for 10 years, called home. This book was my path to redemption, my way of putting my life back together. It is also my soap-box from where to seek answers to the questions that vex, confuse and intrigue me and the canvass upon which I have endeavoured to paint my picture of the world.
Synopsis
Aengus lived in a vibrant new city, among charming new friends, with a thriving career. There was never any hint that, just a scratch below the surface of his world, lurked desolate emptiness. When his wife, Caitríona, is killed in a traffic accident, the thin veneer is suddenly and irredeemably ripped away. And so he seeks out the only person who can give him back a little piece of Caitríona – the daughter they gave up for adoption some twenty years before.
His search takes him home to Ireland and to the father with whom he has endured a fractured relationship, to old friends that he has carelessly left behind. He discovers a sense of belonging with people who will always be his own. In places long-forgotten. In dreams he once coveted but never dared to grasp. Bad Things Happen is a dark tale of one man’s search for the light. Because when bad things happen, there can be no redemption without belonging.
