Why I wrote this book

The story was first inspired by an angry, neglected little boy I used to know, who, when he was playing truant from school, used to go round burgling the local houses.  My aim was to make this unloved character loveable, to provoke empathy and to transform his destiny.

All the characters in this story were inspired by my observations of real people.  I also drew on my own childhood experiences and case studies from my psychology degree.

I wrote this book for my daughter who, even as a child, befriended absolutely everyone, regardless of their age, looks, popularity and whether they were nit-ridden or not.  I also dedicated this book to the memory of my mother-in-law who, despite being very disabled with M.S, always seemed cheerful and was an excellent companion.

I wanted to write an entertaining feel-good story, which had a satisfying ending.  I have always been intrigued by the coincidences that link people together.  I believe in the far-reaching consequences of altruism, and in the importance of kindness to animals.

Synopsis

Not your typical black-hearted burglar, Dean is a neglected 11-year-old, free to roam the streets, day and night, and encouraged to steal by his older brother in a secret life of crime.

Then, one day, during a break-in, Dean meets someone who makes his adventures take a whole new direction.

A timeless story for children but a message for all, 3 Aug 2011
By Mark.L.Carpenter

Jackie Martin has created a timeless and moving tale for young and old. It is unfair to label this as a childrens book, because the message contained within is of value to us all, and the writing is dynamic enough to be a page turner for adults as well as the young.
The author has beautifully illustrated that there is good in everyone. Her empathy with the rogue subject of the story, how the character shown to the world is a result of his situation which has mutated the inate goodness, and how this beauty is drawn out by a chance contact, is heart-warming stuff. How we could all learn from this message - get inside the other persons skin and see the world from their position, and suddenly they become easier to understand and relate to.

I hope this book will be as widely read as it deserves, and the love contained within its pages rubs off on those fortunate enough to have found it. A wonderful read!

A book for children and adults to enjoy. 28 Jun 2011

`Burglar Boy' is a delightful story of an unfortunate young boy who steals for his brother. He believes he is unloved by everyone, but is he? One day, during a break-in, he meets someone very special who will change his life forever. A very heart-warming story, extremely well written by the Author.

Special people who are few and far between, 7 July 2011
By Tong

On the surface, this is a story about a misguided young boy, which will appeal to the awakening conscience of the younger reader. However, beneath there is a more powerful story about a rare type of person and the effect they have on the lives of others. So, for the older reader, it may stir memories of a special person they have had the pleasure of meeting, who made a difference and could never be forgotten. Tears are possible. Or, and even as well as, may inspire them to become a special person themselves. Pure magic... pleasantly written, realistic sub-plots and a positive conclusion.

A good holiday read for all, 1 July 2011

This is a brilliant story and so nicely put together. It's about a vulnerable eleven year old child that manages to overcome his social disadvantage and turn his life around. Highly recommended for all the family to read.

A really engaging read.  Very well written, each chapter led into the next so that you couldn’t put it down!  I read a lot of ‘Teen Fiction’, but this must rank as one of the best.  Poignant and moving, lovely descriptions, Jackie Martin obviously knows a lot about the darker lives of some teenagers.  I look forward to reading her next book.

My wife’s reactions to this book made me curious to read it – and likewise, I found it gripping from start to finish.  A thoroughly entertaining and credible story!

About the Author

Jackie Martin
Hello, I’m Jackie Martin.  I’m a former cartoonist and children’s entertainer with many years’ experience working as a teaching assistant and private tutor.  I grew up in Langley, near Slough, but I’ve lived in Beaconsfield for the last 8 years with my husband and daughter, and German shepherd who recently passed away.

I have a First-class (Honours) Degree in Psychology and I’ve always been passionate about enhancing the learning experiences of young people and raising their self-esteem.  So, now that I don’t have a lovely old dog to look after, I’m looking forward to qualifying as a primary school teacher in 2012.

Although my stories have received lots of interest from publishers and literary agents over the years, it has taken me a long time to hone my writing skills and become a published author.  I persevered mainly due to the encouragement of Cornerstones and Kids’ Corner:
“This book is very accomplished – almost faultless – timely, poignant and moving”
…It has “several strong characters and a lively plot.”
“This story has great integrity and… would appeal to both boys and girls.”
It “could be an important addition to any child’s reading experience.”
