Why I wrote this book

On my return from riding a motorcycle 100,000 miles around the world I felt like Gulliver babbling about strange new lands and horses that talk. I needed to share the wonder of what I had seen, to tell as many people as possible that the world, especially the developing world, was not the depressing, dark, decaying, hopeless and violent place that the news reels would have us believe, that it was infinitely more beautiful and full of wonder, a kaleidoscopic tapestry of cultures in which the poorest of souls perpetually retained the richest of spirit. In short I wanted to redress the balance.

Why is it different?
It’s different because of its breadth – adventurous, exciting, inspiring but also inquisitive, informative, philosophical at times, even romantic. The journey and the world are used as a gigantic forum through which to ponder more diverse issues perhaps not normally entertained in a ‘travel book’. Being a couple on one bike adds interest and a female perspective. The sheer magnitude of the journey and the number and diversity of countries visited (64 in total) make this book special. Many of the places visited few will ever reach; places like Mali, Chad, Bolivia, Laos, and Iran.

Why should a reader buy it?
The book has energy, pace and passion, it’s about two ordinary people, a guy and a girl, who find themselves in extraordinary places. Readers will be animated and inspired as well as informed.

Synopsis

Imagine jacking it all in, packing your life into a 41-litre pannier and riding into the sunset. Bearback is the story of two GPs who did just that, downing stethoscopes to take off on a motorcycle to see the world. For anyone who has considered escaping the rat race, even for a second, it's an inspiring read. Across the deserts of Africa, over the mountains of the Andes, deep into the jungles of Indochina, and beyond the Arctic Circle; 100,000 miles unsupported through six continents and 64 countries. A circumnavigation of epic proportion it was to become one of the longest journeys ever undertaken by a couple on one motorcycle, a journey destined to change their lives forever. Undoubtedly a story of high adventure, determined resourcefulness and personal discovery, it is also a tale of freedom and love. Capturing not only the beauty and diversity, but also the spirit of our fast-changing world, with its outstanding photos and inquiring prose, Bearback has the uncanny ability to take you there...dirt, dust, flies and all.

Reviews

Sir Ranulph Fiennes “A remarkable journey. Searching, honest, uplifting.”

About the Author

Dr. Pat Garrod Born in 1964 and qualifying as a doctor in 1988, Pat Garrod was never your typical GP. An inveterate traveller, uneasy with routine, he has worked in Australia, Saudi Arabia and Zimbabwe. Over the past fifteen years, despite a serious motorcycle accident in his early twenties, he has ridden four times across Africa and circumnavigated the globe, always two-up. Other passions include cycling, windsurfing and observing the natural world. He lives with his wife in Dorset, in a 270 year-old sea captain’s cottage. They both still practise medicine.
