Why I wrote this book

Whilst ‘Platonic’ is not an autobiography, the first rule in writing is often quoted as ‘write about what you know’. ‘Platonic’ rose both out of the ashes of my time at the bank and also my own experiences of office gossip. I’ve observed how often it’s assumed that if a man and a woman share a coffee or go out for a lunch time walk that clearly they can’t just be friends and that, indeed, there must be, somewhere in there, an exchange of bodily fluids. Whilst, let’s be honest, this can occasionally be true, it’s not always the case!

I think it’s fair to say that everyone loves to flirt - it’s one of life’s great free gifts! The trouble with anything that’s free, however, is that sometimes people don’t know when to stop and try and take more than they should. Knowing where the boundaries sit is therefore really important. I’ve been really lucky to have some great platonic relationships with some of my female friends, but I’m convinced that this has only been possible because they know I’m a happily married guy, therefore no-one feels threatened and it’s clear that no ulterior motives are on, or under, the table. I wanted to write a story about a couple who had a great friendship but where those boundaries weren’t so clearly defined.

I know that the romantic comedy genre is one normally dominated by female authors and I hope that a tale from a primarily male perspective will offer something new to the reader whilst still ticking the key boxes delivering great characters, romance, originality, insight and witty dialogue.

My book has been compared to the styles of Belinda Jones and Nick Hornby. There is also influence from Richard Curtis.

Synopsis

Jack and Hayley work together and have seemingly the perfect platonic relationship. Possessing an ally in the opposites sexes camp not only gives each other valuable insight into the minds of prospective partners but also enables them to overtly flirt with each other without ulterior motive. They are perfectly happy and believe that they instinctively know where they stand with each other. However, the more their friends and family start to question the true nature of their relationship the more Jack and Hayley find themselves questioning it as well. A series of funny, touching, and bizarre events involving blind dates, a Christening, a Wedding, an ex-girlfriend, a Best man and some eccentric work colleagues provide the back drop for Jack and Hayley's respective trips into confusion, denial, enlightenment, uncertainty and beyond. It's only when they finally manage to clear away the fog that had merrily engulfed them during this time that they discover whether theirs is indeed the perfect platonic relationship.

About the Author

Born in London in 1968 Nick moved to Basingstoke with his parents and older brother a couple of years later. Although he always enjoyed writing he only really started to ‘go public’ with this at his first workplace – a well known high street bank. A new found self confidence, brought about by becoming a father at the age of twenty, in turn brought Nick out of his shell and he started to write and perform in Christmas pantomimes at his work. These quickly blossomed into 45 minute well scripted, if pretty poorly performed, plays which always went down very well with the majority of staff if not the management. A subsequent staff magazine co written by Nick didn’t last too long before it was banned – by the management – on account that the small work content was somewhat overshadowed by the remaining irreverent and potentially libelous content.

In his spare time Nick also presents an on-line radio show on Radio UK International where he combines a mixture of amusing and entertaining waffle with great music. Nick has a love of music and composed the scores for both his wedding and for an amateur production of The Long Good Friday which played the Edinburgh Festival.
