Why I wrote this book
As cancer rates around the world continue to increase, almost every one of us has been touched - directly or indirectly - by this terrible disease. I want to show that cancer isn’t something that hits you like a bolt out of the blue, but that there is a lot we can do in our day-to-day lives to help prevent it. As an estimated 70 percent of all cancers are lifestyle-related - that is, linked to diet, weight, exercise and tobacco use - there there is much we can do to improve our odds.
This is the book I would have liked to have when I was diagnosed with early-stage cervical cancer 10 years ago and was wondering what I could to do improve my prospects for a full recovery. It is the first cancer-prevention book based on the traditional Mediterranean diet, a way of eating that is increasingly validated by medical scientists. It emphasises variety and conviviality, and insists that healthy food can and should be tasty and enjoyable! Zest for Life is one of the few cancer-prevention books that combines cutting-edge science with practical advice and delicious recipes. It is evidence-based, meaning that its recommendations are based on scientifically validated research findings, not on old-wives tales or internet rumours.
Twenty-five per cent of net proceeds from the sale of the book are donated to cancer charities; for details, please see the book’s website, www.zestforlifediet.com.
Synopsis
What we eat influences our chances of developing cancer. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, olive oil, fatty fish, garlic, herbs and spices provides compounds that lower our cancer risk. meanwhile, a typical western diet of processed meat, refined sugar and starches and denatured vegetable fats encourages cancer cells to grow. Most of us know about the importance of a healthy diet, but many of us need help building menus that are best for our bodies. Zest for Life, the first cancer-prevention guide based on the traditional Mediterranean diet, gives all the information and practical advice you need for a delicious diet to boost your defences.
The book has a 120-page science section outlining the principles of anti-cancer eating based on the latest medical research followed by over 160 family friendly recipes that can help you apply the research findings to your everyday life. The book addresses not only cancer patients and their carers, but also healthy individuals wishing to boost their defences. Author Conner Middelmann-Whitney’s engaging style and clear writing make this book highly accessible for all ages and walks of life. Pragmatic, not preachy, Conner shares her own cancer story and suggests many simple ways in which anti-cancer eating can fit into busy schedules and tight budgets.
