Why I wrote this book
The novel is written in response to the slew of ‘Vampire’ novels about sulky teenage vampires who (probably) eat squirrels, rabbits and rats rather than people, and give the impression that, given half the chance, they would join Amnesty International and become folk-singing vegetarians. I wanted to explore evil; the dark nature of an eternal curse and the conflict between love, lust and spirituality; to question what it really means to be a Vampire. I wanted to go deep and I wanted to go dark. But I wanted to do that within a fast moving, character-driven page-turner. ‘Denied’ is the result.
Synopsis
The battle between good and evil has become a war between love and lust1835 -1860
As the black clouds of the industrial age begin their creeping domination of Northern England, a brooding Vampire, Bachell, settles on the outskirts of a bustling Lancashire town, searching for the perfect victim.
Under a death sentence by a powerful female Vampire, Maria, with whom he is obsessed, he has neglected his needs to a dangerous degree. Now he must either feed successfully or face a fate far worse than death. And his perfect victim must be willing.
Not only is the strong-willed but naïve Katie not willing, she is soon to be married. This leads Bachell into a desperate game of manipulation and seduction, dramatically pitting the ideals and emotions of young love against the dark forces of sexual fantasy and lust.
But Katie’s choices will effect more people than herself. And the result of pitting young love against dark desires explodes in uncontrollable ways.
In the bloody aftermath of Bachell’s schemes, a group of dedicated Vampire hunters head to Paris, France, to seek out the all-powerful Maria and exact a revenge from which even she cannot escape.
However, their passion is no match for the power they are determined to destroy, and with Maria reigning from the shadows, they soon find themselves having to make dark choices of their own.
As the impossibility of their mission begins to dawn on the group, they learn that their survival depends on the help of a beautiful, seemingly frail young man, who is feared by all Vampires and who was once known to them.
A young man who holds the power and suffers the curse of the werewolf.
