Why I wrote this book
I wanted to write a book that was exciting as a fictional action thriller but maintain a high level of intrigue by mixing in little known and historical facts. The Synchronicity Factor works on different levels and includes a whiff of the philosophical plus a number of synchronistic and metaphysical events that I have personally experienced.
All this has been translated into fiction and woven into the fabric of the book. Part of turning fact into fiction included the fairly recent discovery that my own father was a member of Churchill’s Special Operations Executive during WWII. I have creatively developed this idea and attached it to Andrew King’s father in the book. The rave reviews from highly respected people encouraged me to publish what I am told is a very enjoyable book.
I have agreed to donate 10% of any profit to charity.
Synopsis
Following his wife’s death and his dismissal from the Argento Corporation, micro engineer Dr Andrew King undergoes a cathartic mid life crisis. Working at night and driven by unknown forces, he creates a remarkable timepiece of unimaginable beauty and powerfully symbolic engravings. But as he makes the final adjustments and presses the casement home, he has no idea what is about to be unleashed, or why the timepiece’s extraordinary power will have such an effect on so many people, inexorably weaving them together in a deadly web of intrigue.
Set in England, France and Switzerland, The Synchronicity Factor is a compulsively readable thriller that plays out at a breathtaking pace. Drawing together a cast of extraordinary characters it blends mythology, history and the supernatural in a page turning mystery as it twists and turns towards a violent climax and an awe-inspiring revelation.
Reviews
Peter Lovesey. Diamond Dagger Lifetime Achievement Award Crime Fiction author.
‘Disturbing and intriguing'. The Synchronicity Factor is much more than a page-turning thriller, for its remarkable plot is rooted in real science and real history.’
Professor Peter Welton – Celebrated artist to the Queen’s private collection.
‘This book has it all…excitement, metaphysics, scandal, corruption, intrigue, sex, shady business practice and beautiful women. For a first novel this is remarkable. It has all the hallmarks of self-assurance and confident use of language. Stephen Hancock knows how to dangle a tit-bit and have the reader salivating for more. He also has an enviable grasp of evocative language. In his vivid description of a fight in Geneva I could have sworn I heard a bone break! If ever I saw a book destined for Hollywood, it’s this one. I found myself casting it. I couldn’t put it down. Brilliant!’
Steve Cockayne – Internationally published author of the Legend of the Lands trilogy and The Good People.
‘Stephen Hancock has created something unique. Working within the conventions of the classic action thriller, The Synchronicity Factor evokes much of the feel and texture of the world of Ian Fleming and Eric Ambler, but cleverly interweaves this with a darkly powerful supernatural strand that hearks back to the best period of Dennis Wheatley. All of this combines to generate a narrative that is packed with twists and turns, racing from one unexpected development to the next and keeping the reader guessing until the very end. The characters are intriguing and strongly-drawn, the settings vivid and memorable, the technology – and the women-glossy and seductive. The Synchronicity is a hugely enjoyable read and I look forward to seeing more work from Stephen Hancock.’
