Synopsis

Set in Hong Kong at the time of the Cultural Revolution riots in 1967, Blue Lantern is a story of sex and police corruption.

Mike Brodie a young police inspector from Glasgow is caught between two women. Helen is a talented and virtuous doctor, whom he can't match. Vanessa is a sordid temptress whom he finds it hard to resist.

He needs more money than he earns to maintain his lifestyle. He is befriended by a slightly older CID cop, a dark and dominant bisexual figure, who fancies him, and wants to lure him into the squeeze system, and a promiscuous life.

Brodie has the example of Sherwin, a friend from the police school who loses his post because he is not prepared to cooperate, is drafted to bomb disposal and killed on duty during the riots. Brodie weakens and takes the money, but later out of self-disgust, makes unauthorised arrests.

Called to account, he tries to reject the money. His room is swiftly searched by the Internal Inquiries squad, luxury purchases he has made are seized, and a warrant issued for his arrest on corruption charges.

What had been a vacation event, crewing on a yacht in the Boxing Day race to Manila, becomes a means of escape. He waits by the yacht basin for Helen, who is to accompany him, on Boxing Day morning . . . will they make it?
