Why I wrote this book
A heady blend of the supernatural, history and legend, and set in forests, moorland and the sea amongst other places:
This book consists of eleven supernatural tales that can be read as stand alone stories, or as a collection that explore underlying human emotions such as lost loves, loneliness etc, with the added ‘spice’ of the lure of the femme fatale. The stories rely more on atmosphere and eerie events and experiences, rather than graphic horror, and are set in the backdrop among the ever-changing moods and seasons of the landscape. Our past, both in history, myth and legend are recurrent throughout the book . The story lines are, I am sure, highly original and should appeal to those of us who like their imaginations fired,as they sit in their favourite armchair amidst the flickering flame red shadows when all is quiet.
Anyone who loves a ghost story will find something for them here.
Synopsis
This book consists of eleven highly original short stories of the supernatural. Each one consists of a sumptuous mix of history and folklore, combined with such human emotions as lost loves, betrayal and loneliness. The stories are set in the atmospheric backdrop of the British landscape with its ever-changing seasons and moods.
The reader travels from the wilds of Northumbria down to the Fens, and onto the picturesque settings of the Cotswolds, The Ridgeway, Wiltshire and Pembroke, where ancient history and the supernatural blend with the stories' contemporary settings.
Some stories such as Bayard's Leap, 'Moving On' and 'Old Shuggy' are highly innovative tales and are loosely based on true accounts of ghosts and legends. Others such as 'Facing Demons' and 'Roxy' explore the inner most psyche. Dreams? Hauntings? Or a disturbed mind?
There is an air of menace about these stories, and a feeling that something has, or is about to happen... Or if one prefers the more bloody or macabre, try 'Bleeding Hearts', 'Fallen Daughters' or 'Fishing for Tiddlers'- no wonder our ancestors believed that evil spirits dwelt in our rivers and trees.
Those that like a love story should find that 'Moving On', 'The Obelisk' and 'Lost Souls' would appeal to their romantic side. After reading 'The Changeling', you may never think of a haunted house in the same way again, or dare look in the mirror for that matter.
Add to all this, femmes fatales, stone circles and a small dose of black humour, and you have a compelling series of tales that are by far, best appreciated of an evening in your favourite armchair, when all is quiet.
