Why I wrote this book

There are many wonderful spiritual books out there, but they tend to focus on the light. Sometimes we find it hard to see the light when we are in a very dark place, and people talking about the light can seem to be making things too simple. I wanted to show someone’s journey from a very dark place into a lighter one. I wanted to acknowledge the pain of it, and to show a way through, and to do it in an entertaining, non-preachy way. When we have understanding, it all seems so easy, but before we reach that place it seems impossible. My role is to help make it possible, and I think we achieve that by accepting the darkness and aiming for the light.

Synopsis

A story of love, loss and learning how to live.

Maggie is a popular local radio presenter whose lover, Patrick, dies in a car crash caused by somebody jumping a red light. The thing is, he’s supposed to be somewhere else entirely. She sets out to discover why he was where he was, and to try to bring the person who caused the accident to rights. The people she meets along the way bring her to a quite different understanding of life, death, love and loss.

This is a guidebook for people who are looking for a way to navigate grief and to learn to forgive. But more than that, it is a dark comedy, venturing into the grittier side of human emotion where spiritual books often do not go.

Reviews

Amazon: "This book charts the pain and the utter desperation of losing a loved one. The writing is so beautiful that one minute your heart is aching for Maggie as she searches for answers, the next minute you are laughing out loud at the writer’s skilful use of dark humour. A surprising book that stays in your thoughts. I loved it."

Amazon: "It's soon clear this is a psychological novel, Maggie, suffering shock from the sudden death of her (estranged) lover, is struggling to come to terms with what has happened, and the mysterious circumstances which cloud the disappearance of her former lover, Patrick. Soon we are into the back story and the way in which the narrative slips so easily between the present (tense) events and the past episodes is a technical triumph, and thrilling to read, particularly because of the sensitive use of detail of those everyday things which convince the reader this is not a fiction. I like the way too that subsidiary characters are drawn into the plot, and their relationships with Maggie is gradually exposed through subsequent episodes, the back story eked out, letting the reader share the work. This, for me, gave me an involvement I welcomed. I felt appropriate empathy towards Maggie to such a degree, I found, at times, as if I was reading what I could easily have thought in similar circumstances myself. I was fascinated by the close relationships portrayed between Maggie, Barney, Patrick and Emily. These again were extremely well conveyed. Forgiveness is a thoroughly well plotted story with excellent quality of writing. Maggie eventually emerges from a state of shock, bereavement and scepticism with greater inner resources, more open minded, and wiser. In many ways it reads like a film script, it's very visual, set in scenes, and with terrific dialogue. It's a very good novel too, the `healing' scenes have a convincing feel to them, and the development of Maggie's path to redemption through forgiveness is thoroughly engaging. It is a novel which lives on in one's consciousness long after the book has been put down."

Amazon: "I couldn’t put it down until I'd finished it. It held me there from the moment I started reading, through till the end of the last page. Magic!! That lovely blue cover, with just the word 'Forgiveness' is part of its mystery, the only way to find out is to open it and start reading, then you’re hooked - what's it about, who's it for, what does it mean? It is beautifully written, you can really identify with all of the characters, their emotions their hang-ups, fears and disbeliefs. I am already looking forward to the next book - can't wait."
