Why I wrote this book
I wrote the book to continue amusing myself (after Pushing Envelopes) and as I wrote it I thought once again that it might give pleasure to others. And that is my sole motive – to raise a smile or a grin or even an outburst of laughter. Anyone who works or has worked in an office will recognise some of the goings on; likewise anyone who has been round psychologists or, that much rarer breed, the consultant philosopher. If you want something light-hearted to brighten the day but with serious social observations and a couple of deaths folded in along the way, then try this and when you have read it try the earlier book in the trilogy – Pushing Envelopes (if you have not already done so, that is) and the next book Ten A Penny, just to see what happens. And if you become curious about me as a person you could pick up my memoir Mackem Mayhem.
Synopsis
What to do if you turn out to have a doppelganger? Psychologist Clive ‘Rab’ Mewles, first curator of the Psychologists’ Hall of Fame Museum, is about to find out. Just remember: never ever clap eyes on your doppo for it is a premonition of your death; and don’t rely on to help you out. Meanwhile Clive’s assistant, Julie Owens, has been wondering if those new kids on the block -- philosophical counsellors -- might have more to offer than bog standard psychology. She pays a visit to a Socratic shrink.
Marcus Friend, anti-hero of Pushing Envelopes, is in a sorry state. Seems he can’t read or write -– or is that won’t? Clive gives a talk in Brighton, but is stressed by heckling from an old foe, Sri Blenkyavan aka SriBeebie. To relax, he decides to walk a stretch of the South Downs Way. Big mistake. Next day, by the River Ouse, two men materialise suddenly and tip him into the river. Clive is a poor swimmer and the current is strong: what will become of him?
Julie is sure her philosophical counsellor is a lech. So why is she Sharon Stoning him? At the museum Clive has finally turned up, accompanied by no less than his doppelganger (as Julie thinks). At the sight of them she freaks out. Why is Clive not dead? Why is the doppo not dead? As for the pest SriBeebie, lurking somewhere, has the Bloem boy lost the will to live? Buddhism is a tough calling and eating all those beans can’t be doing him any good. And the twins: what lies in store for them?
