Why I wrote this book
‘The child is father to the man’ is a familiar phrase, easily uttered. But for this Mackem boy it contains a psychological truth. Robert Wood has been led to examine his reactions to events in his life -- impulsive, needy impatient... and that’s just for starters.
This book lays bare what came to the surface when the author dropped his metaphoric bucket into his life and hauled it to the surface. This is not a sequential biography, though, as large portions of his life are missing. What emerges is a picture of selected experiences that deeply affected his early life. Yet, amid all the mayhem, the frustrations, the bewilderment, the embarrassment, the tussles, anger and shame, the tribulations of a father who never got over the war, the tragedy of a mother and now a sister, there is love. Given and received.
Synopsis
‘The child is the father of the man’, a familiar phrase, yet it is really only a proposition. For this Mackem boy who grew up in Sunderland it contains a psychological truth.
What emerges is a picture of selected experiences that deeply affected a life -- and running throughout is a personal fight against drink.
This is what Robert Wood wants to say. Amid all the mayhem, the frustrations, the bewilderment, the embarrassment, the tussles, anger and shame, the tribulations of a father who never got over the war, the tragedy of a mother and now a sister, there is love. Given and received.
